Application

Applications are open to recent and past graduates with master's degrees recognized by both universities.

Proficiency in English listening, speaking, reading, and writing is required. Applicants must be able to accept English as the medium of instruction, read literature in English, write academic papers, and be able upon completion to defend their dissertation in front of the seven-member examination committee in English. Applicants must provide valid English proficiency certificates or equivalent academic degrees or diplomas from academic programs in English. In case that an applicant is not able to provide the aforementioned, a joint two-member committee, one from each university, will assess the English knowledge level of the applicant.

Further, applicants must have demonstrated excellent academic performance during undergraduate and graduate studies and must meet the PhD admission requirements of both the World Sinology and Studies of China program at Beijing Language and Culture University and the Cultural Heritage studies in Sinology and Chinese studies and in Translation and Interpreting Studies at the Ionian University.

The first call for applications for the CHASE Joint Doctoral Program will be published in April 2025 (April 1st, 2025 - April 30th, 2025) by both partner institutions.

Application Documents

All documents must be submitted in English. If the original documents are in Chinese or any other language, scanned copies of both the original and translated documents must be provided. Failure to submit any required document will result in disqualification.

  1. Certificates for bachelor's and master's degrees (scanned copies)
  2. Official transcripts of undergraduate and postgraduate studies (including all modules and courses)
  3. English language proficiency certificates (not required for native English speakers and for graduates of academic programs offered exclusively in English)
  4. Two references from experts
  5. Personal statement
  6. Scanned copies of ID card (both sides) and/or passport
  7. Recent passport-size photo taken within three months
