The "Sino-Balkanica" conference is a hub of knowledge and interdisciplinary approach and cooperation for the study of cultural, linguistic, and historical ties and intersections between China, the Balkans, and the wider SE Europe. The conference examines the multifaceted interactions and influences that have shaped their relations over time and the promotion and development of Sinology in the Balkan region within the framework of a global network for dialogue between civilizations.
The first conference "Sino-Balkanica: Intersections of Culture, Language, and History," was held in Ohrid, North Macedonia, from 26 to 29 August 2023. The organizer was the "Knowledge Center for Sinology", a collaboration between the World Center for Sinology of Beijing Language and Culture University and the Academy of Sciences and Arts of North Macedonia. The conference included a variety of presentations by scholars from China and the Balkans, covering topics such as: The Evolution of North Macedonian Sinology, Comparative Studies of Confucian and Platonic Governance, Analyses of Political Festivals in China and Greece, and Discussions on the Path of China-Balkan Cultural Communications.
The second Sino-Balkanica conference was held in Sofia, Bulgaria, from 7 to 9 November 2024 at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in Sofia, Bulgaria, under the title “Sino-Balkan Cultural Dialogue: Challenges and Perspectives in a Global Context.”. The conference was jointly organized by the Bulgarian Sinologists Association and the World Center for Sinology. The conference will be held on 7–9 November 2024, at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in Sofia, Bulgaria. The aim of this conference is to facilitate substantive discussions and exchanges of ideas between scholars, researchers, and experts from China, the Balkans, and beyond on the following topics:
Historical and contemporary interactions of China and the Balkans. Language and Translation Studies in Sino-Balkan Cultural Relations. Educational and academic exchanges between China and the Balkans. Art, literature, religion, and philosophy in the Sino-Balkan Cultural Dialogue. Problems and Prospects of Balkan Sinology. Strategies for Promoting the Development of Balkan Sinology in Secondary and Higher Education.
The organization of the third Sino-Balkanica 2025 conference has been undertaken by the Hellenic Sinological Center of the Ionian University in Corfu, Greece.
